Sawrey Villages Kendal
Cumbria LA22 0LF
The most charming way to get to the little hamlets of Far Sawrey and Near Sawrey is via the Windermere Ferry.  This delightful little ferry carries a few vehicles at a time across a narrow stretch of water avoiding the long drive all the way around Windermere.  It is an excellent shortcut to Beatrix Potter’s home of Hill Top.
After the fun of crossing the lake by boat, prepare yourself for a lovely drive along a narrow lane sometimes roofed over by trees, other times appearing to narrowly miss entering a whitewashed farm.
The writer has travelled this route many times over the years and has never failed to be astonished by the beauty of the area and the wildlife to be encountered.  One day we saw a small deer grazing in the dappled sunlight right beside the road.
Near Sawrey & Far Sawrey
In typical Lakeland fashion there is no ‘Sawrey’ village just two communities either ‘Near Sawrey’ or ‘Far Sawrey’.  From the ferry point, Far Sawrey is the first village encountered.  It is really only a collection of farmhouses around which the lane skirts.  A mile further on is the larger village of Near Sawrey where Beatrix Potter bought her charming house, Hill Top.  This is a National Trust property and visited by thousands of visitors each year.
Next to Hill Top is the Tower Bank Arms pub and the rest of the village rambles up Stones Lane hill on the right.
If you keep driving along the lane to Hawkshead Village you will pass a beautiful little lake, Esthwaite Water.  Beatrix spent many happy hours in a rowing boat, fishing on this stretch of water.
