Lake District

The very nature of England’s Lake District involves a lot of driving around beautiful lakes and over narrow winding passes.  For example, to get from the busy commercial centres on Windermere’s eastern shore to the quiet and beautiful scenery on the western shore requires a road journey of approximately 15 miles (24 km).

A much easier and quicker route is to take the Windermere Ferry from Ferry Nab, Bowness to Ferry House, Far Sawrey.  This crossing is considered part of the B5285 road and regular services run all year except 25 & 26 December.  The ferry transports vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, and horses.

Ferries depart every 20 minutes, commencing at 06:50 and finishing at 21:50 on weekedays.  The Sunday timetable varies slightly. The trip takes approximately 10 minutes.

Fares & Timetable

You will notice that if you are planning to use this route regularly, purchasing a book of tickets is well worth considering.

Summer Minibus Service Service 525
