Chawton is a typical old north Hampshire village. Thatched cottages cluster around a village green and in the centre of the village was the home of the celebrated novelist Jane Austen.

Her delightful 17th century red brick house is now a museum containing family furniture, personal items, first editions of her novels and the donkey cart she used as her health started to fail.

The nearby church of St Nicholas contains references to the Austen family and the graves of Mrs Austen and Jane’s sister Cassandra are in the churchyard.
