The Royal Pump Rooms
The Parade
Warwickshire CV32 4AA

Centrally located, this grand building is now the cultural heart of Leamington Spa.  It houses the Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum, a library, the Tourist Information Centre, Assembly rooms and Café.

The catalyst that brought about the town’s growth was the re-discovery in 1784 of the healing properties of the town’s spa waters. These waters had been known to the Romans, however they had fallen into disuse.

Royal Pump House and Baths opened in 1714
By 1810, the bath houses then in use could not cope with the increasing number of visitors. A new source of the healing spa waters was located. By July 1814 ‘The Royal Pump Rooms and Baths’ had been built and opened for use.

The gardens had a bandstand where military bands entertained the Pump Room patrons.

The Pump Room was very grand and attracted many visitors eager to bathe in the salty spa water in the hope that it would soothe various aches and ailments.

The spa water is also a mild laxative and can still be sampled outside the building, for those brave enough to drink it!

In the early days, the profits from the enterprise were excellent, however by 1848 ‘taking the waters’ had declined in popularity.  Profits started to diminish and the building fell into disuse.

The Pump Rooms were refurbished around 1996 and the building is now the cultural, heritage and leisure centre for Leamington. For the different facilities housed in the centre, visit the official website (link below) and click on ‘Services’
