Spa Valley Railway
If you are looking for a different day out from London, then a visit to The Spa Valley Railway (SVR) in south-east England could be for you. There is the added bonus of a wonderful day out shopping, exploring and dining in the Georgian and Victorian splendour of Royal Tunbridge Wells.
Quick & Easy Day Out from London
This forward looking Heritage Railway has entered into an agreement with Britain's Network Rail and Southern railways linking their 3.5 mile (5.6 km) restored railway at Eridge Station to the genteel spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. The journey from London Bridge station (in the heart of London) to Eridge Station (East Sussex) takes only 55 minutes by fast comfortable electric train.
On arrival at Eridge Station interchange visitors board the Spa Valley Railway service. The train may be hauled by a steam engine or a vintage diesel. It may even be a three car Oxted Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) A check of SVRs timetable will indicate what services are running.
The SVR trip takes approximately 15 minutes and takes the visitor to SVR Tunbridge Wells West station, calling at Groombridge and High Rocks on the way. Tunbridge Wells West is only 3 minutes walk from the town centre and the famous Pantiles.
There is a direct connection with the National Rail at Eridge Station. So easy. A Direct Rail Connection between London Bridge station and Eridge Station (SVR).
The line runs through delightful countryside carpeted with wildflowers. From May the trackside is covered with drifts of bluebells and wood anemones. Starting at Tunbridge Wells West station the train runs beside the River Groom to its first stop at High Rocks. The station is located in the garden of the historic High Rocks Inn and Restaurant. Passengers can alight to explore the High Rocks geological formation or spend a more leisurely time at the Inn, enjoying a quiet drink and watching the trains go by.
The next station on the line is Groombridge. A new station building has facilities and toilets.
Passengers alighting at Groombridge can visit the small village or the award winning (External Link) Web: Groombridge Place Gardens (External Link) and Enchanted Forest, set in the grounds of a 17th Century manor house. A joint ticket between the railway and Groombridge Place is available.
The headquarters of the SVR at Tunbridge Wells West terminus is located in the former LBSCR 75F engine shed. The shed houses the shop and ticket office, as well as the society's growing collection of locomotives and rolling stock. Refreshments are served in the buffet car outside the shed adjacent to the platform. The railway's workshops are also located there with all the restoration work being carried out in the shed.
All the SVRs locomotives and rolling stock can be viewed on their website.
