The real heroes of Britain are the thousands of volunteers who man the nation’s lifeboats.  A visit to a local lifeboat station is a humbling and very interesting experience. The Torbay Lifeboat is stationed at Brixham on Berry Head Road.
The crews man an all weather boat that answers calls from ships and yachts in distress, plus an inshore D-class boat that attends emergencies such as swimmers in difficulty, rock climbers stranded by the tide, attempted suicides and even foolhardy holidaymakers trying to paddle to Torquay in a rubber blow-up dinghy!
Awards for Gallantry
These men have a remarkable history of bravery with 52 awards for gallantry.
Visitors to the Lifeboat Station can see the memorials; learn more about these brave deeds and the history of the Torbay Lifeboat service which was started after a severe storm in 1866. On the night of 10th January 1866 a terrible storm blew up preventing the local sailing trawlers from getting back to port.  The beacon on the breakwater was washed away, and in the black darkness they could not determine their position.
According to local legend, their wives brought everything they could carry, including furniture and bedding, to make a big bonfire on the quayside to guide their men home. Fifty vessels were wrecked and more than one hundred lives were lost in the storm; when dawn broke the wreckage stretched for nearly three miles up the coast.
Hearing of this tragedy, the citizens of Exeter gave money to set up what became the RNLI’s Torbay lifeboat.  The current boat station is a modern building with a beautiful sculpture in the forecourt depicting a man in a boat reaching out to help a fellow seaman floundering in the water.
