Babbacombe Cliff Railway
Babbacombe Downs Road
Devon TQ1 3LF
There are only 16 cliff railways left operating in Britain and Babbacombe is one of them.  A cliff railway is a cable railway in which a cable is attached to a pair of tram-like vehicles on rails laid down a steep slope, the ascending and descending vehicles counterbalance each other.
The Babbacombe Cliff Railway descends a 250 foot (76.2 mtres) cliff to Oddicombe Beach.  Each car holds 40 standing passengers and the lift descends at 2.5 metres a second.
Babbacombe beach to the south is accessed by a walkway along the beach from the lower station. This is a delightful small beach set beneath the cliffs at Babbacombe Downs. For more information, please refer to the official Torbay Council  Web: Babbacombe Beach    External Link
Descending from Babbacombe Downs, the Cliff Railway has been operating since 1926.  It is run by Torbay Council and subject to daily mechanical inspections to ensure safety. The Cliff Railway is a great way to access the beaches if you don’t want to walk down the steep beach road (1:3 gradient) or use the woodland paths.
Oddicombe Beach is shingle and rock and bottlenose dolphins can often be seen. Facilities include toilets, a café and beach huts for hire.
Babbacombe beach is sand and very popular especially with SCUBA divers.  It has toilets and a café.
