The South Devon Railway (SDR) runs through the Dart Valley from Buckfastleigh to Totnes, a distance of 7 miles (11 km).  It has been a heritage railway for forty years and runs both steam and diesel locomotives.

Heritage buses operate services from Buckfastleigh Station to Buckfast Abbey and the Buckfastleigh town centre when the railway is operating.

The railway runs beside the pretty River Dart through countryside not accessible by road.  It has a small station at the tiny village of Staverton where passengers may wish to alight.  A riverside walk takes you to the village with its early 14th century church of St Paul and also the local Sea Trout pub.

SDR joins National Mainline Rail at Totnes Town Station
Totnes Littlehampton station is linked to the Totnes mainline rail station by a footpath.  Many visitors use this method of public transport to access a day out on the SDR.  Attractions at Totnes include the old town, a castle and the Rare Breeds Farm alongside the station.

Buckfastleigh is the largest station and is the western end to the line.  It has an excellent museum, model shop, refreshment room, picnic areas, gardens with a maze, riverside walks and plentiful free parking.  The excellent Buckfast Butterfly Farm & Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary is close by and a joint railway/attraction ticket is available.

Voted Heritage Railway of the Year in 2007
This railway operates regularly throughout the year and was voted 'Heritage Railway of the Year' in 2007.  It offers a wide variety of experiences for both families and enthusiasts.  The station at Totnes has been created entirely from buildings and artefacts rescued from GWR stations all around the west of England.
