Hall’s Croft Stratford-upon-Avon
Old Town
Warwickshire CV37 6BG
Hall’s Croft was the home of Shakespeare’s eldest daughter, Susanna and her husband Dr John Hall. It is said to be one of the finest half timbered gabled houses in Stratford. It is an elegant early 17th century house with large rooms and windows.
This is one of five properties owned and managed by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. The other properties are Shakespeare's Birthplace, Nash's House & New Place, all in Stratford plus Anne Hathaway's Cottage at Shottery and Mary Arden's Farm at Wilmcote.
Interior Decorated with early 17th Century Furniture
To recreate the house as it would have been in Susanna’s time, the interior has been decorated with a collection of early 17th century furniture and art. Dr Hall’s consulting room contains his notebooks and medical artifacts.
At the rear of the house, there is a rather large, stunning garden – in this garden, Dr Hall grew the herbs mentioned in his medical notes. It is said that he developed a cure for scurvy by prescribing the use of some of these plants which were rich in ascorbic acid.
There is also a mention of Ghosts! For decades there have been reports of unexplained happenings and sightings. Some say that Hall’s Croft is the most haunted of the Shakespeare properties.
