Anne Hathaway’s Cottage is the childhood home of William Shakespeare’s wife. It is about one mile (2 kms) outside Stratford town centre on the outskirts of the small village of Shottery.

The thatched, half timbered cottage surrounded by its award-winning ‘country garden’ is a picture. The garden is packed with roses and herbaceous borders surrounded by rolling lawn. It is a substantial 12 roomed Elizabethan farmhouse, with the first part near the road built in the early 1460’s. The orchard end was extended in the 1600’s.

The house is filled with period furniture including the ‘Second Best Bed’ that Shakespeare specifically willed to his wife. According to author Germaine Greer this was not an insult to his wife because ‘first best beds’ were actually an inbuilt feature of a house and could not be moved.
