Who would expect to find one of the best collections of exotic birds in Britain on display in the pretty Cotswold town of Bourton-on-the-Water?  Not only does Birdland have colourful parrots, long legged storks, and pink flamingos, it has the only other collection of King Penguins in Britain, outside of Edinburgh.
The Kings are the second largest of the penguin species.  Their large outdoor enclosure includes a clear sided pool where these amazing birds that are so clumsy on land, dive and slice effortlessly through the water.
The Park and Gardens are home to newly refurbished aviaries and specialist zones such as the Desert House where birds from arid zones are housed.  There are 10 species of bird ranging from the Desert finch to the Carmine Bee-Eater.
Marshmouth Nature Reserve
At the other end of the scale is the newly opened 2.5 acre Marshmouth Nature Reserve.  The trail accesses marshland, ponds, meadow, copse and views over the River Windrush.  Hides have been provided beside the river and various feeding stations where over 50 species of birds, including the spectacular Kingfisher are regularly seen.
Many other kinds of wildlife can be seen such as frogs, toads, grass snakes, beetles to dragonflies, Red Admiral butterflies  and several species of mammal.  Hundreds of species of plants from Marsh Marigolds to Alder trees are thriving and maturing returning a former industrial site to unspoilt Cotswold countryside.
Penguin Feeding
The spectacular King and Humboldt penguins are fed at 14:30 hours each day.  The keeper will feed and give a presentation on the birds, their habits etc.
The birds’ welfare in a suitable environment is of paramount importance at Birdland.  It is a great place to visit and a thoroughly recommended attraction.
