Any visitor to the Cotswolds will have come across the award-winning Hook Real Ales either on tap or in bottles.  They are traditionally brewed in a picturesque setting so a brewery tour is an entertaining day out.

The brewery at Hook Norton close to Banbury in the north Cotswolds was established around 1849.  The present six-storey building was built in 1898.  Much of the original brewing equipment installed at this time is still in use today including the brewery's showpiece, a 25hp steam engine, which provides nearly all of the motive power.

Delivery by brewery horse & dray
The steam engine is not the only unusual feature of this brewery. Local deliveries are still made by horse and dray.  Each brewery tour either starts or ends with a visit to the stables to meet the shire horses - Major, Albert and Nelson. Each horse has his own character and temperament.

The Shire horse is a powerful yet majestic creature and the sight of the two Shire horses leaving the brewery is extremely impressive.  They make deliveries on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

To capture this photo opportunity and see the drays on their regular delivery round, the Brewery recommends telephoning them on Tel: +44 (0)1608 737 210 or Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
