The Telford Steam Railway (TSR) in Shropshire, England is a heritage railway run by a small group of volunteers with big ambitions.

They are aiming to restore a substantial length of the old Wellington and Severn Junction railway that was built between 1857 and1861. The old railway served the stations of Wellington, Ketley, Horsehay & Dawley, Doseley, Lightmoor and Coalbrookdale. Eventually the TSR is hoping to have a heritage railway link right into the Ironbridge Gorge.

The TSR currently operates a regular passenger timetable consisting of a departure from Spring Village north to the Heath Hill tunnel entrance, and then back along the line, to stop at Horsehay & Dawley. The train then repeats this journey in reverse, for a round trip taking 30 minutes.

The TSR occupies the former site of a large manufacturing company that made the plates for the 'SS Great Britain' and many railway bridges destined for all over the world. The line that served the factory went from Wellington to Craven Arms.

Between Easter and the end of September, trains operate each Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. The railway is also open for Santa Specials during December.

About the Railway
The TSR is different to most heritage railways because it has a lot of rolling stock, some undergoing restoration, but currently only a short length of operating line. The standard gauge track is only 0.75 miles (1.2 km) long, however it will soon be extended.

There are no beautifully restored stations as yet, but the TSR has other attractions instead:

- The beautifully restored steam powered ‘Rocket’ 0-4-0ST locomotive;
- The 2 foot gauge Telford Town Tramway; and
- The ‘Top Link’ Model Railway.

‘Rocket’ Locomotive
This 0-4-0ST steam locomotive was originally built by Peckett and Sons Ltd of Bristol in 1926. Recently overhauled, it has come back into public service. For photos and details on a Driving Experience, go to  Web:  TSR Rocket Steam Engine

Telford Town Tramway
An additional attraction at the Railway is the steam tram which runs beside Horsehay Pool on a ‘‘U’ shaped track approximately 100 yards long. The 2 foot gauge tram and trailer were built by Alan Keef in 1977 for the abortive Telford Town Park Tramway. For photos of the tram and further information  go to  Web:  Telford Town Tramway

Model Railway
Get off the train at the Horsehay & Dawley station platform to visit the model railway which can be found in the Railway House next to the Furnace Tearooms.

The working model railway is an extensive OO gauge construction. Started in 1976 it is constantly updated and maintained.

Ghostly Goings On
The Old Loco Shed is the centre of TSR operations. Old locos are restored here and it is where the volunteers meet, work and socialise. On several occasions, volunteers working in the shed have been joined by a ghostly fireman and driver overseeing the work. On the empty platform, ghostly crowds have been seen waiting for the train to arrive. Paranormal investigators believe the ghosts are waiting for their loco to be restored and the railway to start operating again. It remains to be seen if they can finally rest easy knowing their beloved locos and stations are once again in operation.
