Bladon is a small village in Oxfordshire, almost 8 miles (13 km) from Oxford and close to Blenheim Palace and the village of Woodstock.

Sir Winston Churchill’s Grave
The village’s main claim to fame is that the great Sir Winston Churchill lies buried in the local churchyard. He is buried next to his parents and other members of the Spencer-Churchill families in the family burial area.

Sir Winston died on 24th January 1965. His funeral service was held at St Paul's Cathedral, London and was attended by Queen Elizabeth ll together with heads of government from all over the world. His burial at Bladon was a private ceremony with only close friends and family being present.

The grave was refurbished in 1998; however there is little space between the family grave plots to allow visitors to get a good view and photographs. Sir Winston’s grave marker is nearest to the churchyard footpath which it faces. All the other family headstones face away from the public.

St Martin's Parish Church
The church is on the left hand side as you go through the village. The present St Martin's is on the site of an earlier building which was demolished in the early years of the 19th century. This church was built in 1804, however like many Cotswold churches, it was further modernised in the Victorian era.

The village itself is attractive with many of the older houses dating from as early as the 15th century to the 18th and 19th centuries.

Bladon is thronged all year round with visitors who come to visit the churchyard. It is a small village with virtually no parking available, and definitely none at the church.

Tip
We suggest that Visitors wishing to view Bladon Churchyard and Churchill’s grave first visit the nearby Blenheim Palace. There is a footpath from the Palace across the fields to Bladon and the Churchyard. The walk takes approximately 30 minutes through exquisite country scenery.  Please refer to the brochure link on the Blenheim Palace article in this website.
