“Museum” is a bit of a misnomer for this extraordinary Gallery in London’s Shad Thames on the south bank of the river.
Shad Thames was an appalling place in Charles Dickens’ time but it has been reborn as a haven for upmarket housing and modern designers. The Design Museum is located near Tower Bridge, right beside the Thames. It hosts changing exhibitions of modern graphic and product design.
Far from holding collections of interesting old objects, the Museum displays modern design in all forms, from the every-day to the cutting edge.
Annual Designs of the Year Exhibition
The Design Museum is responsible for the Designs of the Year award. Designs produced over the previous twelve months worldwide are eligible. A number of internationally respected design experts are invited to nominate up to five projects each, falling into the seven categories of Architecture, Transport, Graphics, Interactive, Product, Furniture and Fashion.
The winners are displayed in the Museum.
The Design Museum is currently housed in a former 1940s banana warehouse. The conversion of this warehouse altered it beyond recognition to resemble a building in the International Modernist style of the 1930s.
In 2016 the Design Museum is going to move to a new site in West London. The new premises are much larger and formerly housed the Commonwealth Institute. Exciting times are ahead for the Design Museum and its many visitors.
