Standing on the south side of the river Thames and easily accessible to visitors is the George Inn - London’s last remaining 17th century galleried coaching inn.
This Inn is a must see for visitors to London – enjoy a pint here.
George is a fully operating Pub
Now safe from re-development this pub is in the care of the National Trust but still operates as a public house.
Many centuries ago London Bridge was the only access across the River Thames to the City of London so naturally the area was well served with inns and taverns catering to the many visitors coming to London and the pilgrims setting off south to Canterbury.
Chaucer's Canterbury Pilgrims
Next door to the George was The Tabard, meeting place for Chaucer’s Canterbury Pilgrims. These half-timbered thatched inns were a terrible fire hazard and in 1676 a disastrous fire swept through Southwark burning down The Tabard and The George. Both inns were rebuilt and what we see today at the George dates from this time.
Coach travel was replaced by the coming of the railway and The Tabard was demolished despite a public outcry. The George was acquired by The Great Northern Railway who turned the building into a depot and used two of the wings for warehousing. Fortunately the south wing was saved.
The George is located just off Borough High Street in a cobbled courtyard. It has oak beams and latticed windows and the ground floor is separated into several connecting bars. The Old Bar was the waiting room for passengers and coachmen, and the Middle Bar was the Coffee House, often frequented by Charles Dickens who actually mentions the George Inn in his novel ‘Little Dorrit’. Upstairs in the gallery was the accommodation and this now houses the restaurant.
