The house and museum of distinguished British architect Sir John Soane RA, is one of the hidden gems of London. Although not on the ‘must-see‘ list of London attractions, it is nevertheless a fascinating place in delightful surroundings.

Soane (1753-1837) is famous as the architect of some notable London buildings such as the Bank of England, Chelsea Royal Hospital, Nos. 10 and 11 Downing Street.

He was a great collector of antiquities and art and designed a remarkable house to live in and display his collection. He left it all to the nation and entry is free. To make the best use of the house Soane employed overhead natural lighting and ingenious methods of storing paintings in folding cabinets. The rooms have now been redecorated in the original vibrant reds and yellows of his period.

Canaletto, Hogarth and Turner
The collection includes 3 Canaletto paintings and 2 complete sets of Hogarth ‘modern moral’ narrative paintings (The Rake’s Progress and An Election); an original wooden boss from the medieval painted ceiling of Westminster Hall (later destroyed by fire); a JMW Turner painting in its original frame which Soane bought from Turner’s own gallery.

Egyptian Sarcophagus

There is an amazing Egyptian marble sarcophagus; a mummified cat; Greek and Roman antiquities; a calendar watch presented to Sir Christopher Wren by Queen Anne, and so much more.

Access to the newly opened Soane's private apartments and Model Room is only via booked tours

The house is hidden away in a garden square behind the gardens of Lincoln’s Inn Fields, just follow the signs. Lincoln’s Inn Fields are a delightful quiet, shady spot to enjoy your sandwiches.
