Honister Slate Mine
Cumbria CA12 5XN
The Lake District is not only beautiful but has a long and interesting industrial heritage. Iron, lead, copper and slate has been extracted from the mountains since prehistoric times. Honister Pass between Buttermere and Keswick on Derwentwater is not only a spectacularly scenic route but also has a fascinating working slate mine which is open to the public.
As well as the interesting underground tours through the actual workings there is the terrifying Via Ferrata Classic & Xtreme Zip Wire, especially for the adrenalin junkies. Clip on and climb 2,000 feet (610 metres) up exposed rock faces to Honister Crag before swooping down to the valley floor in 30 seconds!
Underground Slate Mine Attraction
This is a top place to visit and extremely professionally run with excellent modern facilities. Entry to the Visitor Centre, Shop and facilities is free. The Underground Tours and Adventure Attractions must be booked and of course, there is a cost. Visit the mine’s excellent website, see ‘Contact & Further Information’ link below.
The beautiful Westmoreland Green Slate is quarried from deep inside Honister Crag. All participants in Honister’s Mine Tours must be reasonably fit and healthy, dressed in appropriate clothing and wearing closed-in walking shoes or boots.
This is the most popular guided tour and takes the visitor through level workings to the caverns inside. Helmets and lights are provided and the tour is suitable for all ages. It is also a wonderful way to keep dry on a rainy day!
This tour is for the more adventurous and follows part of the original miners’ route out on the edge of Fleetwith Pike before going deep underground. Participants must be a minimum of 4ft 3inches (1.30 metres) tall and at least 10 years old.
The Cathedral Mine Tour
This is a very special individual, bespoke tour of the working mine conducted by the mine owner. Participants must be fit and active and the minimum height restriction of 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 metres) also applies. It is more expensive than the other tours and bookings are non-refundable.
