Yes, this substantial Tudor brick mansion in Christchurch Park is open to the public and is free to visit!

Built in 1548-50, the ground floor is largely original but the upper floors were rebuilt in 1670 following a disastrous fire. The main porch was added at this time.

Paintings by Constable and Gainsborough
The beautiful period rooms are filled with artefacts from Ipswich’s past and collections of paintings by John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough.

Some of the 16th – 19th century rooms are preserved as past inhabitants would have known them, complete with original items of fine clothing.

You can see enchanting toys and historic games as well as fine Lowestoft porcelain and collections of glass. There is a contemporary art gallery as well as the finest collection of Constables outside of London. The mansion has been owned by the town since 1895 and has formed one of the two principal venues of the Ipswich Corporation Museums. It is now part of the Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service.

Christchurch Park
The mansion is located within a 70 acre (28.3 hectare) public park. Christchurch Park features many beautiful trees, rolling lawns and ponds.

The land was originally the grounds of a medieval Augustinian priory and it is believed the Round and Wilderness ponds were monastery fish ponds. The park is home to over 100 different varieties of birds including ducks, geese and swans. Many squirrels inhabit the arboreta. The park’s postcode is IP4 2BX.
