The seaside resort of Hastings in south-east England has two 19th century funicular cliff railways. The East Hill Lift is the steepest in the country and takes visitors from the Old Town Stade to the top of East Cliff. The other funicular cliff railway is the West Hill Lift.

The line has a gradient of 78% and rises up a cleft in the rock a distance of 267 feet (81 metres). Two cars, each carrying 16 passengers, run on a double track.

The lift is now operated electrically although originally the line operated on the water balance principle. The two towers at the top station held the water tanks for this purpose.

From the top of the cliff there are magnificent views over the Old Town with its extraordinary old Net ‘Shops’ on The Stade and the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe. Apart from the lovely views the lift provides easy access for visitors to Hastings Country Park.

The Park has 660 acres (267 hectares) of ancient woodland, heathland and grassland together with 3.2 miles (5 km) of dramatic cliffs and coastline.

In the 1890s the Council acquired the land but had a lengthy struggle with its owner before obtaining planning permission to build this ‘modern’ facility for the people of Hastings. The deep faults in the rock made construction difficult and hazardous for the workers but eventually it was opened in 1902.

The railway has recently undergone extensive refurbishment involving new cars and new control and safety systems.

A ride on the East Hill Lift can be incorporated with a visit to the Old Town Stade, the Fishermen's Museum and the Blue Reef Aquarium.

East Hill Lift is been owned and operated by the Hastings Borough Council.
