Visitors looking for a pleasant local pub in Rye will not be disappointed if they go to the Ypres (pronounced ‘Wipers’) Castle Inn. It is a delightful white weather-board building tucked into the hill below Ypres Tower.

Built originally in 1640 and added to in Victorian times, the pub has a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. It is the only Inn in medieval Rye with a garden which is an agreeable place to enjoy food and drink on warm sunny days.

From the garden there are delightful views of The Ypres Tower, Romney Marshes and the River Rother, with its working fishing fleet just metres away.

Pub Food
Excellent pub food is on offer at reasonable prices. Traditional fare such as Ploughman’s Lunch, Scotch Eggs and Soup of the Day with freshly baked Baguettes for example.

The pub prides itself on its ever changing menu incorporating mostly local products, including Rye Bay Scallops, Winchelsea Pork, Romney Marsh Lamb plus Ham cooked in local Cider. Lunch and dinner menus in PDF format can be downloaded from ‘The Wipers’ own website (see Ypres Castle Inn website link below).

The Inn is popular with tourists and locals alike. It has excellent live music mainly on Friday nights, but on other days during August. Check the pub’s online events calendar.
