The Smugglers Adventure Hastings
St Clements Caves
West Hill
East Sussex TN34 3HY
Deep in the sandstone caves beneath West Hill in Hastings in south-east England is a very different visitor attraction. Smuggling was a way of life for coastal communities in the 18th century.
The Smugglers Adventure tells the true history of this sometimes romanticized activity in an exciting way.
For a start, visitors descend into the real caves, passing from cavern to cavern, along low tunnels, up and down steps and steep slopes. Over seventy life sized wax models illustrate the smugglers’ activities. A fictional smuggler, ‘Hairy Jack’ narrates the story. There are scary noises and apparitions as well as interactive displays.
Pick up a telephone and listen to stories of the infamous Hawkhurst Gang who frequented Hastings.
Most children will love this attraction but be prepared, some of the gory details are not hidden and some of the soundtrack might frighten small children.
Smugglers Adventure has a very good website one can visit and know exactly what to expect.
