Gloucester City Museum
& Art Gallery
Gloucester GL1 1HP
The Gloucester City Museum & Art Gallery is close to the centre of town, just off Eastgate Street. It holds an astonishing collection of local archaeological, fossilised and natural history objects as well as fine collections of furniture, ceramics and silverware.
The Victorian Gothic building housing the Museum was built in 1802 over a section of the Roman city wall. Inside the visitor will find a modern facility with objects beautifully displayed in an attractive, uncluttered way with easy to read explanatory notes.
Gloucester’s associations with pre-history, Roman and Medieval occupation up to the 17th century Civil War can be best appreciated by viewing the many wonderful objects on display.
Gloucester City Museum & Art Gallery has recently re-opened following a makeover.
The new ground floor exhibitions and exhibits promise a much more interactive experience. Highlights include a complete redisplay of the ground floor to include a Roman kitchen, playhouse and medieval street.
