Gloucestershire GL14 1PD
A small village with an important tourist attraction, just 9 miles (14.5km) from Gloucester, right beside the main A48 road to south Wales is the National Trust property, Westbury Court Garden, the only surviving 17th century Dutch water garden in the UK.
The centre of the village is clustered around Westbury Parish Church, the village cross, the Red Lion Inn and a group of delightful cottages in Bell Lane. The Burial Ground behind the Primary School provides beautiful views over the River Severn towards Newnham.
A footpath from the end of Bell Lane leads to the river and Garden Cliff about half a mile away. The path can be muddy so wear Wellington boots or good walking shoes. The cliff is well known for its pre-historic fossils.
The Westbury parish covers a large area made up of very small villages and farming communities dating from medieval times. Many of the cottages are timber framed but have been plastered over giving the appearance of being more modern.
To get the feel of real rural England, turn right, off the main road and wander along the narrow lanes, enjoying the wildflowers on the verges and the blossom in the hedgerows. In autumn you can feast on sweet, wild blackberries.
This village is an excellent starting point for your visit to the nearby Royal Forest of Dean.
