Street Village Wells
Somerset BA16 0BB

The large village of Street is located on the A39, only a mile (1.6 km) or so south west of Glastonbury Village.

The name 'Street' comes from the Roman name ‘Strata’ meaning a paved road. The Romans gave the name to the village when they renewed their causeway between the village and Glastonbury.

A Quaker Community
In the mid 17th Century, the Quakers (Society of Friends) settled in the area. Amongst this group was the Clark family who established a sheepskin rug business. This business gradually evolved into a boot and shoe manufacturer and the village is now the home of C & J Clark Ltd, probably better known as Clarks, the British shoe manufacturers.

Clarks Village
Although manufacturing is no longer conducted in the village, the Clark Shoe headquarters continues to be located there. The company has set up a ‘factory’ outlet (Clarks Village) on the site of its former factory buildings.

The Village is said to be the UK’s first ‘factory outlet’ with over 90 outlet shops offering discounts on famous brands.
