Gathered together in the Jubilee Park are a number of visitor attractions including the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo.

Be prepared for a warm, steamy atmosphere because it is teeming with exotic tropical butterflies as well as those found in Britain.

Although it is indoors, the free-flying butterflies obviously enjoy the foliage inside - breeding, laying eggs, hatching into caterpillars then becoming a chrysalis before emerging as a beautiful butterfly.

On arrival visitors are met by a staff member who will explain what to look for, and provide a magnifying glass and recognition sheets for identifying the different species. Throughout the attraction staff are on hand to help and point out anything they think you might have missed.

The butterflies seem to have no fear of people and will often actually land on you. There is no better way to get a really close look at these beautiful insects.

Make sure you have your camera ready!

Butterfly Conservation
The Zoo is deeply involved in conserving butterflies throughout the world. In the 19th century, nearly all the butterflies in the Upper Wye Gorge had disappeared (in fact six species are now extinct). Thanks to conservation, now there are over thirty indigenous species on the hills around Symonds Yat. If you would like to know more about helping butterflies.
