Topsham Village
Devon EX3 0AA

Topsham is a delightful riverside village just 3.7 miles (6 km) from the centre of Exeter in Devon. As a suburb of Exeter it has excellent public transport links yet has managed to retain its historic village atmosphere.

Lovely Georgian and 18th century Dutch gabled houses overlook the river and harbour. Passenger ferries shuttle across the river to The Exeter Ship Canal and RSPB Nature Reserve on Exminster Marshes - Exe Estuary RSPB.

Topsham’s long maritime history is reflected in the many boat slips and narrow alleyways leading from the quay. A port ever since Roman times, Topsham grew to be the 2nd busiest port in England in the 17th century. Shipbuilding and fishing were important industries along with the export of serge cloth from the Exeter mills, and the import of coal.

Dutch Style Houses
The splendid Dutch style houses overlooking the river were built between 1700 and 1730. One of the old houses on the Strand is now the excellent Topsham Museum. Other old buildings house delightful pubs and restaurants.

HM Queen Elizabeth ll
The Bridge Inn recently received a visit from HM Queen Elizabeth II whilst the Turf Hotel at Turf Lock is unique in that it is one of the few pubs in the country not accessible by road - so walking, cycling and boating are recommended.
