The Bridge Inn Exeter
Devon EX3 0QQ
If you are looking for a real traditional English pub you shouldn’t miss The Bridge Inn at Topsham Village, Devon.
The pub website says it all: 'The Bridge is not so much a pub, more a Museum with Beer, and we are lucky that so many people share our vision of a truly Traditional Pub with Traditional Values'.
The pub was built in the 16th century, overlooking the Clyst River. Painted a delightful salmon pink, it has been run by the same family for over 100 years. They serve Real Ale brewed by the Branscombe Vale Brewery and are famous for their brews commissioned for special occasions.
Pork Pies, Pasties and Cheeses
To accompany your pint there are traditional Chunks Pork Pies and Vegetable Pasties, and local cheese. Why not finish up with delicious local Salcombe Dairy Ice-cream.
The current building was erected on the site of an 11th century hostelry where it is said the stonemasons who worked on Exeter Cathedral stayed. During the 16th century the inn brewed its own beer and visitors can see the old brewhouse at the rear built in traditional Devon cob. This still has the remains of the hop drying floor, and is adjacent to a large brewing chimney.
Celebration 101 Brew
The Bridge Inn gained its 15 minutes of worldwide fame when it was visited by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1997. A case of the special 101 Celebration brew was sent home with her for the Duke of Edinburgh to enjoy!
