ExeterDouble Locks Inn
Canal Banks
Devon EX2 6LT

As its name suggests, the pub is beside the Double Locks on The Exeter Ship Canal. ‘Double Locks’ is technically a misnomer because it is really an extremely long single lock (the longest in the country) capable of taking two ships at a time.

Originally built in 1701 as a lock house, it was remodelled in 1827 when the canal was extended, to provide accommodation for the lock keeper’s cottage and stables for the barge horses. The stables have now been turned into the ‘barn bar’.

The pub is very popular, especially with students from the Exeter University campuses. This association goes back a long way giving rise to a rather gruesome story: “In the 1930s the lock keeper at the Double Locks found a human leg wrapped in a parcel. A second search produced the other leg, however, when police divers went looking in the canal for the rest of the body, none was found leading them to suspect medical students.” [courtesy of the pub’s own website]
