The ancient little market town of Sandwich in south-east England is the home of one of Britain’s most famous links golf courses, the Royal St George’s.

The challenging course with its undulating fairways and fast true greens is considered one of the world’s best. It is on the British Open rotation and Royal St George’s turn came up inJuly 2011.

James Bond Connection
This prestigious club has welcomed amateur golfers, many of them famous in their own professions, for over 120 years. The author Ian Fleming lived at St Margaret’s Bay, Dover but played golf at Royal St George’s. He was Captain-elect at the time of his sudden death in 1964.

Fans of Fleming’s books about James Bond will remember the golfing duel between Bond and arch villain Goldfinger in the book 'Goldfinger'. This gripping match took place at the imaginary course Royal St. Marks, which is clearly based on Royal St. George's. Even the Club Professional, Albert Whiting, featured as the fictional Club Professional Albert Blacking who set up the match.
