Six thousand years of Dorset history are on display in this excellent museum. Housed in a lovely gothic-style building dating from 1884 the museum has displays ranging from Roman mosaic floors uncovered locally to a reconstruction of Thomas Hardy’s library/writing room with original manuscripts.
Visitors can find out about local art and writers, ancient and social history, archaeology, geology including fossilised dinosaur footprints, Dorset wildlife and farming history. Special attention has been paid to making the museum fun for children to visit.

Disabled access to the ground floor and via lift to the Jurassic Coast Gallery. Toilets on the ground floor. There is a set down point in front of the Museum. Nearest disabled parking is at the 'Top O' Town' car park.
