Tolpuddle Martyrs’ Festival Dorchester
Dorset DT2
The Trades Union movement organises this Festival each year to honour the Tolpuddle Martyrs and their contribution to the cause of trade unionism.
The Festival is held over the third weekend in July and is getting bigger every year. There is the serious side with processions, wreath laying on James Hammett’s grave in St John the Evangelist churchyard and a service in the Methodist Chapel.
As well there is music everywhere, food stalls, entertainment, speeches, poetry, sporting events, special activities and craft for children. Guided tours of the Old Crown Court & Cells in Dorchester are organised and to relieve traffic congestion, shuttle buses are run. A fully equipped campsite is available for the Festival.
