The multi award-winning Colchester Castle Museum has always been an outstanding place to visit. Now it is even better.

The Museum showcases archaeological collections of international quality covering 2,000 years of history, including some of the most important Roman finds in Britain.

There are new interactive displays including new finds and star exhibits like the tombstone of the Roman centurion Marcus Favonius Facillis, the Colchester Vase and the Colchester Mercury statuette.

Family friendly
Take the children along to have a go at building a Norman archway, excavating a Roman doctor's grave or steering a chariot. There are regular family events, and plenty to occupy children from dressing up to stepping inside a recreated thatched roundhouse.
Roman Temple of Claudius
In the vaults of the museum are the remains of a Roman temple. Dating from 55-60AD this was the grandest of all Roman buildings built in Colonia Claudia (Colchester), the first capital of Roman Britain.
Experts lead tours down into this Roman vault several times a day. There is a small additional charge for this tour and it can be booked on the day.
