Cardiff Bay

Cardiff Bay is the new name given to the historic and regenerated waterfront area of south Cardiff. It includes Mermaid Quay, the Inner Harbour and the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
Old and new buildings house interesting craft centres, galleries, museums and event venues. The whole area has been designed to be pedestrian friendly with easily accessible shops, entertainment and places to eat and drink close to hotels and accommodation.
Public art in the form of modern and traditional sculptures, memorials and water features are dotted throughout the area.
Much use is made of the water and the Taff river running through the centre of the city. Water buses run regularly connecting the castle and city centre with Cardiff Bay.
In the regenerated bay area are some notable old and new buildings well worth visiting. The Norwegian Church Arts Centre is a delightful historic wooden church famous for its associations with children’s author, Roald Dahl.
Close by is Cardiff’s iconic Pierhead building and the modern Senedd (Parliament) building housing The National Assembly for Wales. The Pierhead is open to the public and houses a most interesting exhibition of Welsh history. Next door is the stunning Wales Millenium Centre home to the Welsh National Opera.
Opposite the Wales Millennium Centre and close to the Senedd is a refurbished Victorian dockside building housing Craft in the Bay, the home of the Makers Guild in Wales. As well as the Exhibition Hall there is a craft retail shop.
The Techniquest is an interactive educational science and discovery centre, which also includes a science theatre and planetarium. It is housed in a former engineering workshop and is extremely popular with children of all ages.
Along the waterfront, Mermaid Quay comprises a mix of restaurants, bars, cafés, shops and services. The quay is a stop on the Cardiff Waterbus which offers a public transport service and tourist cruises.
