Theatr Brycheiniog

One of the ‘must-see’ buildings in the little Welsh town of Brecon is Theatre Brycheiniog, the town’s modern Theatre, Arts and Community Centre.

Located at Canal Wharf in the Basin of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, the building resembles a canal warehouse. Opened in 1997 as part of the regeneration of the canal, the building is constructed of red brick with a Welsh slate roof.

Two timber-clad projections with stone parapets, house gantry towers and solar panels on the roof generate part of the building’s energy needs. In 2007 it became the first solar-powered theatre in Wales.

Facilities
The complex provides a theatre auditorium, art gallery, conference venue, restaurant with local Welsh cuisine, a bar, community spaces, and offers excellent views of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Theatre
The 477 seat auditorium is square with seating on three levels with side slips. The floor is flat with seating waggons, mounted on air castors to allow a variety of arrangements. This up-to-date theatre is equipped with a 58 line counterweight flying system, an orchestra pit and sixteen trap doors. Three lighting bridges span the auditorium.

There is also a rehearsal studio, which doubles as a conference room, capable of seating 150.

The venue currently provides a varied programme of theatre, dance, music and entertainment ranging from stand up comedians to folk singers and full orchestras, both national and international. It is home to the Brecon Baroque Festival and Brecon Jazz Futures, which both attract audiences and visitors nationally and internationally.

Art Gallery
The Gallery exhibits local, national and international artists, with spaces for hire for community and commercial use.
