The Royal Oak is located a little distance outside the town of Monmouth in the beautiful Wye Valley. It is not a Listed Building but a friendly, family-run public house with an attached camping ground. Hard standings are available for touring caravans with electrical hook ups.
The Royal Oak is famous for its extensive range of reasonably priced food and its 1950s decor. Lunchtime and Evening Meals can be enjoyed in the bar, restaurant or garden areas and Real Ale is served.
Opening Times
The Royal Oak is typical of many country pubs in that it sometimes closes for a couple of hours between the lunchtime and evening sessions.
Monday – Thursday: 11:00 – 15:00 & 17:00 – 23:00 hours
Friday:                    11:00 – 15:00 & 17:00 – 24:00 hours
Saturday                 11:00 – 24:00 hours
Sunday:                  12:00 – 15:00 & 19:00 – 22:30 hours
Public Bar Decor
The public bar of this food-led pub was refitted in the late 1950s and has barely changed since, making it a rare survivor from those times. The back of the bar has 'Whitbread' illuminated panels at the top, a glass block backing and some Formica shelves.
The bar counter, wood-backed fixed seating with two baffles and stone fireplace all date from the late 1950s, the only change being a new wood top on the old Formica one, which remains. Note the old Bass Blue Triangle glass fronted sign on the wall.
To the right an arch leads to a room which was extended by removing a wall and fireplace. The front section retains a two door leaded glass panel hatch to the side of the bar with a Formica top and old bare bench bay window seating.
Other Rooms
here is a two-part dining room on the left with no old fittings. The function room on the right doubles as an old fashioned skittle alley.
The Royal Oak is the heart of the local community. You will always be welcomed by a friendly smile and warm open fires through the winter months. During the summer relax in the garden while admiring attractive views of the Wye Valley.
