125 Monnow St
Gwent NP25 3EG
Spectacularly located beside the River Monnow and overlooking the ancient fortified Monnow Bridge is the Gate House Restaurant & Inn. Its elegant Georgian frontage belies the fact that this public house is actually quite a bit older than 18th century.
The medieval Monnow Bridge is the only remaining fortified bridge in the UK and dates back to circa 1277 AD. It is floodlit at night and provides a splendid backdrop to the Inn’s eating areas. The Gatehouse bar has three levels. The main deep split level bar has flagstones on the floor and attractive modern artwork dotted around the walls giving it an air of sophistication; note also the optician test card! Two comfortable sofas are beneath the TV. The bar gives access to a three-tiered sun trap Riverside Gallery garden overlooking the River Monnow.

Originally called ‘The Barley Mow’, the building was established as a public house by 1812. Interestingly, the pub played an important role in Welsh social history by hosting a women’s pension fund. A 'Women’s Friendly Society' met in the building once a month. The women paid small amounts into a fund which they then withdrew in times of being unable to work due to childbirth, sickness, accidents or old age.
Food & Drink
The Gatehouse is now a family owned and run independent Free House with a reputation for good home-cooked food. The menu changes regularly making use of locally sourced fish, game (particularly Venison) and vegetables in season. Sunday roasts and Yorkshire pudding are a great favourite and table booking is recommended.
Restaurant Meal Service
Every day 12:00 – 20:00 hours.
The tastefully furnished restaurant is upstairs. There is an ever changing selection of quality real ales, a wide choice of reasonably priced fine wines, an extraordinary choice of spirits and a different well priced Malt Whisky is featured each month. The two guest ales are usually popular brands from well known breweries.
Every Thursday night the pub holds a Trivia Quiz and everyone is welcome to participate. There are also live music evenings.
Al fresco dining on the terraces (weather permitting).
