The Avon Valley Railway is a restored steam railway located almost equidistant from both Bath and Bristol and on the A431.
Part of the former Mangotsfield to Bath Green Park branch of the old Midland Railway has been returned to its former glory. The six mile (9.7 km) return trip runs through delightful countryside, giving a wonderful view of the River Avon. The Railway shares some of its route with the Bristol and Bath Railway Path – part of the UK’s National Cycle Network.
Operated by a local group, the Avon Valley Railway Company Limited, the railway is based at Bitton Station. The station was in a derelict state of repair prior to its acquisition in 1972. It has now been restored in the old LMS colours, with visitor refreshment and toilet facilities and a railway shop.
Since it was opened in 1972, the Railway has amassed a large collection of locomotives and carriages. A number are stored at Bitton Station where they are undergoing restoration.
The Route
The train journey begins at Bitton and travels to Oldland Common Station to the north. The train retraces its journey to Bitton and then onwards to Avon Riverside station on the Bath side of Bitton. The trip takes one hour.
The Railway states "Avon Riverside Station offers passengers the opportunity to enjoy the many attractions of the area – boat trips, riverside pubs, picnic area, and walks in the beautiful countryside". Surely, the perfect way to start or finish your nostalgic steam train ride!
