American Museum in Britain
Somerset BA2 7BD
Only a ten-minute taxi ride from Bath Spa Railway Station or free shuttle bus from the City Centre, this unique museum is dedicated to fostering Anglo-American relations. Visitors to the museum will see beautiful examples of early American furniture and Amish quilts.
Exhibits date from colonisation in the 17th century and follow the American way of life through to the mid 19th century. In the lovely grounds is a replica of George Washington’s Mount Vernon garden.
In 1956 two Antique Dealers (American Dallas Pratt and naturalised American John Judkyn) decided they wanted to foster better Anglo-American relations and an appreciation of American culture through the decorative arts. They needed somewhere to house a collection and the Claverton Manor estate came on to the market. Built in 1820 it was designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville who worked on additions to Longleat, Badminton and Windsor Castle.
As well as the period rooms there are collections of maps, North American Indian artefacts and Folk Art. American Civil War re-enactments are held in the grounds and numerous activities for both adults and children.
