Hartland Quay Hotel Barnstaple
Hartland
Nr Bideford
North Devon EX39

Surrounded by spectacular cliffs and overlooking Bideford Bay in North Devon is the Hartland Quay Hotel. It is the only substantial building left of what was once a bustling port.

Local Mariners - Drake, Raleigh & Hawkins
In 1586 the Quay was built through the efforts of three well known local mariners – Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir John Hawkins.

It became a busy port, shipping coal, granite and farm produce. A thriving community grew up around The Quay over the centuries with all the facilities necessary, including a bank.

Present Hotel formed from local buildings in 1886
In 1886, an ‘oast’ house (formerly the bank) and some stables were turned into the current Hotel. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Quay was suffering damage from the relentless pounding of the Atlantic Ocean. During a ferocious gale in 1887 The Quay was demolished and the port ultimately died.

The Hotel, however, has continued to flourish. Situated at the bottom of a steep hill, it is the only large building left at The Quay. It is owned by the Stucley family of Hartland Abbey and for the last forty years has been run by several generations of the Johns Family who live on the premises.

The Hotel has a public bar where meals and snacks are served and there is a restaurant where evening meals and breakfasts are served to residents. There are 17 rooms, most with en-suite facilities, a large lounge and free parking for residents.

Opposite the Hotel is the fascinating Hartland Quay Shipwreck Museum and a gift shop.

Day Visitor Parking & Walks
For day visitors there is plenty of very reasonably priced parking.

Walkers can access the South West Coast Path for an invigorating day’s exercise. The spectacular Spekes Mill Mouth Waterfall is only 20 minutes along the path. A more leisurely day can be spent on the beach exploring the rock pools and studying the fascinating geology of the area.
