Who has not heard of the famed Fortnum & Mason picnic hampers? These hampers contain luxury Stilton cheeses, smoked salmon, Russian caviar, Quails eggs and champagne. They remain highly popular in England today, especially when attending the Henley Regatta or the Royal Ascot Racecourse and such like.
At Christmas time, hampers can cost many thousands of pounds with the more expensive Christmas orders being delivered by a liveried driver.
Fortnum & Mason is one of the world’s most famous stores. It was founded in 1707 as a grocery store by William Fortnum and Hugh Mason. The stores’ reputation was gained by supplying quality food mainly to British Royalty and to the well off upper classes of British society.
Fortnum's Mechanical Clock
Above the main entrance of the store is a large ornate clock which gives a performance every hour. As the clock chimes, a door on each side of the clock face opens and out come two four-foot (1.2 metre) high models of William Fortnum and Hugh Mason. Mr Fortnum and Mr Mason bow to each other whilst 18th century music is played on bells. At the end they turn and go back inside and the doors close. It is not hard to spot the tourists – we are the ones who stop and avidly watch the whole show.
